Post your unknown-unique outdoor spots in Canada

Postby getoutmore » Mon Feb 01, 2010 2:30 pm

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Dee, I'm working with Subaru to help outdoor enthusiasts join the Get Out More community (http://www.subaru.ca/getoutmore) and post their unique or unknown outdoor spots.

We're currently sending out the site to outdoor enthusiasts to test it out and provide us with their feedback. If you love to get out, http://www.subaru.ca/getoutmoreis the place for you. The site maps the most unique, satisfying and underrated activities in Canada, as experienced and shared by a community of fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Find a new place to escape to, or show off your savvy and upload your own breath of fresh air.

Cheers,

Dee

Suburu? Isn't that a car company?

Oh, wait, I get it. this is a promo for the Outback! Well aren't the board members at Suburu clever. I will definitely be sharing all my best secret outdoor locations. I think I'll start with all the best outhouses in Saskatchewan and work my way down from there.

Beaker, don't make me come over there and smack you. Dee, don't mind Beaker, he's rude to everyone.

I'll try something constructive. Dee, it looks good. Nice bright icons and all that. But a bit light on the information, I found. I wouldn't go back to visit or bookmark it or anything. A lot of sites have very detailed trail wikis etc. that makes this a bit superficial in comparison. Maybe it'll grow like you hope. Good luck!

I just had to post after reading this one...

I'm there with you Beaker, why the hell should we be supporting a car company's (or anyone's) efforts to document every last 'secret spot' ??? I admit I use many resources such as the internet and guidebooks when planning trips but I don't want every last detail and GPS coordinate. What happened to the spirit of discovery?

Too often I've found the 'idyllic island campspot' mentioned in guides to be an overused and usually crowded spot I'd rather not stop at.

JK I have been pleasantly surprised that on every trip we've planned using your books we make a discovery of an incredible spot (killer sea caves, killer sea caves with waterfalls over the mouths, big huge waterfalls spilling into the back of a bay; can you imagine which ones we've visited?) that is either not or only briefly mentioned in your guides. I'm hoping you intentionally didn't put in too much detail and left some things for us to discover, thats one of the cool things about kayaking the BC coast and the thing that keeps dreams alive.

For me I prefer to get the kernel of required info; travel, weather, safety, and maybe a bit of a teaser towards something special then allow me and mine to wander into an adventure!

Ha! Glad to be helpful by not being helpful. It's not always been by design (yes, I've missed gems), but you have to keep in mind that waterfalls are tough ones for any guidebook. They vary dramatically depending on melting snowpacks and the amount of recent rainfall, so one person's spectacular waterfall can be someone else's dribble. This is another reason I've shied away from stating a campsite has a water supply. It may in May, but not August. And it may one year in May, but in another the drift logs on the beach might make the water unreachable. And so on.

As a side note, we've been developing Planet Kayak (www.planetkayak.net) as a map-based platform for sharing kayaking information. We haven't received much input - people tend to be consumers, not providers of information, so we'll be adding it mostly ourselves, I'm sure. But at least we have the magazine information to augment the maps with and we're not relying entirely on charity - or on lifting from other sites.
